Mantle Dynamics Beneath the Sichuan Basin and Eastern Tibet From Teleseismic Tomography

چکیده
The cratonic Sichuan Basin is located east of the Tibetan Plateau, and surrounded by mountains that have undergone complex deformation uplift since Cenozoic. Imaging mantle structure important for understanding its formation, to date most models suggest a deep root underlies basin, blocking eastward extrusion lithospheric material beneath Tibet. Here, we obtain detailed upper from teleseismic tomography in region utilizing travel time data earthquakes recorded at 506 seismic stations, including 25 new stations poorly sampled Basin. Rayleigh-wave dispersion reveals crust-mantle decoupling beneath eastern Tibet
The Tibetan Plateau results from the collision of the Indian and Eurasian Plates during the Cenozoic, which produced at least 2,000 km of convergence. Its tectonics is dominated by an eastward extrusion of crustal material that has been explained by models implying either a mechanical decoupling between the crust and the lithosphere, or lithospheric deformation. Discriminating between these end...

AB: We performed shear-wave splitting of core phases using a subset of 33 selected events within an array composed of 48 broadband stations that spans a 650x350 km area crossing the Lhasa and the southern part of the Qiangtang terranes. Our results reveal the presence of azimuthal anisotropy with small-to-moderate delay times (0.5-1.4s). The consistency of the splitting parameters with respect ...
متن کاملUpper mantle Q and thermal structure beneath Tanzania, East Africa from teleseismic P wave spectra
[1] We measure P wave spectral amplitude ratios from deep-focus earthquakes recorded at broadband seismic stations of the Tanzania network to estimate regional variation of sublithospheric mantle attenuation beneath the Tanzania craton and the eastern branch of the East African Rift. One-dimensional profiles of QP adequately explain the systematic variation of P wave attenuation in the sublitho...
متن کاملTibetan and Indian lithospheres in the upper mantle beneath Tibet: Evidence from broadband surfacewave dispersion
[1] Broadband seismic experiments over the last two decades have produced dense data coverage across Tibet. Yet, the mechanism of the India-Asia lithospheric convergence beneath it remains a puzzle, with even its basic features debated and with very different end-member models advocated today. We measured highly accurate Rayleighand Love-wave phase-velocity curves in broad period ranges (up to ...
متن کاملInsights on the upper mantle beneath the Eastern Alps
Analyses of Ps and Sp receiver functions from datasets collected by permanent and temporary seismic stations, image a seismic discontinuity, due to a negative velocity contrast across the entire Eastern Alps. The receiver functions show the presence of the discontinuity within the upper mantle with a resolution of tens of kilometers laterally. It is deeper (100-130 km) below the central portion...
